Stat Geek Smackdown: 2007 Playoffs
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: Editorial, NBA Finals, NBA Playoffs, Props, Site Announcements,
If you’re a fan of this web site, you’re likely a stat geek like the rest of us. While the fantasy season is over for the majority of us, we owe a debt of gratitude to Henry Abbott over at TrueHoop (recently acquired by ESPN) who has put together six of the biggest Stat Heads out there (seven, if you count his mother).
David Berry (U Cal), John Hollinger (ESPN),Jeff Ma (ProTrade), and Justin Kubatko (Basketball-Reference) are only a few of them.
Click here for all of the information, including bios of all the players involved.
I know I’ll be heading there for each round as these guys are amazing. Plus, they all pick the Cavaliers in either four or five games! What!? I’m biased, so what!
Enjoy, fellas…

Stat’s All Folks: The Season Finale

It’s over. Go ahead and breathe that sigh of relief if you won on the final week of the season - THE championship or the consolation title - a win is a win. For those of you that lost, scream but know that the constant waves of anxiety are now over. Fortunately, I came out on the winning end of the PFS Experts League, beating SI.com Fantasy Sports Editor, James Quintong. Sorry, JQ, but someone had to win and I certainly don’t mind it being myself. I also won the DroppingDimes.com Roto Experts League, barely beating PFS and SI.com’s Matt Satten… by half a point! That’s 0.5!!! But enough about me.
Let’s get to the stats and those players that excelled in them (Blue Chippers), gave more production in the various categories relative to where they were drafted (Value Players), and those players that disappointed (Duds) this past season. I’ll review the big three categories a little more heavily since they’re the main categories for a reason. Afterwards, I’ll do a quick hit type of deal with treys, steals, and blocks, looking mostly at the positive to end on a happy note.

And that’s all she wrote, folks.
A special shout-out to Mikki Moore and Bostjan Nachbar for going a combined 13-19 from the floor to keep my FG% afloat. Oh, and beating the Bulls so my Cavaliers got the 2-seed was an added bonus. Well done, gentlemen. A great season all-around - unless you owned Dwyane Wade or Gilbert Areans, of course. Check you all soon…
Real World - Harlem: It’s Finals Time, And Money Is On The Line!

Alright…Here’s the scoop. 10-teams, standard categories, and a decent amount of smack talk. After taking home the title in our fantasy football league this year (two titles in three years), I had a lot of people gunning for me in the hoops league. The draft went a bit awry when a ton of point guards flew off of the board early. My first picks were Elton Brand and Chris Bosh at 10 and 11, respectively. But I digress…
After experiencing the utter brutality of injuries to several of my top selections – Bosh, Michael Redd, Rashard Lewis – I managed to sneak into the post-season as a 5-seed. If I could just make it past the first round, I think I may have a chance to pull off the upsets needed. Oh, and let me preface this whole thing by saying that in my money league, which is in its third year, we count “Ejections” as a category. Yes…you may argue that it’s simply luck (or misfortune) that can win that category, but I will come right back at you with the fact that it’s Head-to-Head fantasy basketball and at this point, it’s all luck anyways.
On to the results…

Wire to Wire aims to be your waiver wire resource for all of your fantasy basketball needs. It will dive into playing time trends, injury replacements, and even an occasional category specialist – all of which can be found on a typical waiver wire within your fantasy league at any given time.
Even though we’re in the final session of the fantasy playoffs, you can cure your Head-to-Headache by keeping an eye on a few key players over the final few games. I’m not going to delve into stats too much this time around, but give you the quick and dirty over who should be on your radar going forward.

The final session of the fantasy playoffs are upon us. If you haven’t had to deal with the loss of any stars this season, I commend you as you’re truly an anomaly this season. The recent additions of Gilbert Arenas and Michael Redd to the list of stars to bite the dust should have owners scrambling for last minute replacements. It’s unfortunate that the players that got you to where you are today can no longer help you, but such is the life in the fantasy basketball playoffs. Here are this week’s recommendations…
(Editor’s Note: I apologize for the delay on this. Had some technical difficulties at the end of last week)

With Toronto fans getting ready for a taste of the playoffs, a delicacy not available in these parts for five years, I wish that only my fantasy hoops season had gone as well. It obviously wasn’t my year. But I digress. How do we keep the fantasy bug biting well into the Spring? Well, who says the fun and games have to stop at the end of the regular season? Perhaps you and your league-mates can consider setting up a playoff pool.
Here are some options and ideas on game play.
Of course, if you are still very much alive in the h2h playoffs, here again is the fantasy playoff weekly breakdown to help you out.
